1. The development of Arc spray technology

Arc spray technology is an important constituent part of Thermal Spray technology, which appeared in beginning of twentieth century. Due to the property limited of Spray equipment then, operators only can spray some metal with low melting point to prevent corrosion of steel surface. With the development and improvement of thermal spray technology, arc spray technology is improving constantly. In the middle of twentieth century, Arc spray technology had already occupied important position. After that, PTA and explosion spraying technology appeared, which can meet high technology requirements of aviation, spaceflight, rocket, etc. To some extent, it restricted development of Arc spray technology. From the 1970s, the appearance of powder cored wire brought entelechy to Arc spray technology. Powder cored wire overcome difficulty drawing of high alloy components wires, it also can fill some nonconducting particle material(ceramic and carbide) into powder core wire, then the core wire can be used in Arc spray, such as Al2O3, TiO2, TiB2, Cr3C2, etc. Powder cored wire has advantage of adjusting chemical composition simply, short delivery time, easy to get raw material, low cost, etc. So it prompted development of Arc spray technology. This technology has been widely used in boiler heat surface for anti-wear.

2. New era of Arc spray technology

With spray material types increasing and properties improvement, from the 1980s Arc spray equipment developed to precision and automation. Such as HVOF spray, high speed impulse Arc spray, composite Arc spray, protective gas Arc spray, vacuum Arc spray, etc. The appearance of these new Arc spray technologies improved spray efficient greatly, also improved spray coating quality, and expanded application field of Arc spray technology.
