A Brief Introduction to Three kinds of Tungsten Carbide Powder for Thermal Spraying
Transition metal elements such as Ti, Zr, Hf, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W can form carbides with high hardness, high melting point and high chemical stability characteristic of typical ceramic materials. At the same time, these carbides have typical metallic properties and their physical properties such as electrical resistivity can be compared with transition metals and their alloys, so these metal carbides are sometimes referred to as cermet.
These high hardness metal carbides will have a high abrasion resistance for making the coatings, however, the powder will be poorly bonded to the steel substrate when applied directly to thermal spraying.
Most of the transition metal carbides can be wetted by some metal and alloy melt, which can form a good combination with the metal substrate in thermal spraying. The cermet which is composed of a metal carbide and the metal or the alloy can be used for thermal spraying.
WC-series cermet powder currently is the most used thermal spraying of cermet powder. The WC cermet are mixed with the carbide powder and metal (alloy) powder in proportion to agglomeration and sintering. The size of powder, ceramic powder and metal (alloy) powder has a certain effect on the thermal spray coating. Usually in the range of available particle size, with high pore coarse granularity of powder coating, the surface roughness is high, slightly lower hardness, wear resistance is a sightly poor. HVOF spraying (such as the use of JP5000 spray gun), the spraying distance is short, the powder particle size effect is relatively big ; coating distance is long (more use of long Barrel pipe), powder particle size effect is small. Coating hardness and wear resistance and other properties are also determined by the powder and the composition of the phase in the thermal spraying process of heating, melting and reaction conditions.
