Introduction to Powder-Cored Wires of Wisdom

Wisdom has two kinds of metal cored wires. One is solid-cored wire and another is powder-cored one. The basic composition of powder-cored wire can be considered as a tubular electrode consists of outer metal sheath and inner powdered materials. The metal sheath can be cobalt, nickel and iron based. Electrical current is conducted by the sheath during the welding and thermal spraying processes. The internal powder composition is comprised of both elemental and alloyed powders such as cobalt, nickel, chromium, tungsten, molybdenum, and manganese.

 

The manufacturing process of powder-cored wire is very different from alloyed wires, during which a metal strip is transformed to the outer metallic sheath wrapping the powder inside. On the other side, the powder is fed into the sheath by a specialized feeding process that can ensure the precision. The wire is then rolled into a tubular shape. Finally it is drawn to the required diameter with range from 1.2 mm to 3.2 mm. MIG, MAG, FCA, SAW welding and arc spraying are the typical processes that apply powder-cored wires.

 

The advantages of using powder-cored wires are that it brings higher deposition rates, reduced slag, and reduced fumes. Besides, it can improve the bonding properties and coating porosity. There are other 4 advantages below compared to alloyed wires:

1)      Overcome the problem that highly alloyed composition is hard to drawn to wires

2)      Facilitate nonconductive composition applied by arc spray with method that fills Al2O3, TiO2, WC, Cr3C2 etc. powder into conductive sheath

3)      Ease the adjustment of wire composition so that special alloys can be manufactured, and industrial applications are expanded

4)      Reduce the production time so that the comprehensive cost is lowered
