Characteristics and Applications of Ceramic Coatings

Compared with the overall structural ceramic material, ceramic coating technology has the following characteristics:

1. It can organically combine the toughness, easy processing and other properties of metal materials with the high temperature resistance, wear resistance, corrosion resistance and other properties of ceramic materials.

2. Reasonable selection of coating materials and suitable spraying process can obtain surface strengthening coatings with various functions.

3. Not limited by the substrate: The base material used for thermal spraying may be inorganic materials like metal, ceramic, cement, refractory material, stone, gypsum and others or organic materials like plastic, rubber, wood, paper, etc.

4. Not subject to the size of the work piece and the construction site.

5. The coating has fast deposition rate, controllable thickness and simple process.

6. The ceramic coating has good machinability and can be resprayed if the coating is damaged.

Thermal spray ceramic coating technology has a wide range of applications, including:

1.Thermal barrier coatingThe key components of aero-engines are high-temperature alloy turbine blades and turbine disks, which are exposed to harsh environments such as high temperatures, oxidation and high-speed airflow erosion. For gas turbine components subjected to temperatures up to 1100 ° C, which has exceeded the temperature limit (1075 ° C) for nickel-base super alloys. The effective solution is to apply high melting ceramic coating with good adiabaticity, called thermal barrier coating, which mainly used for heating components of aviation, marine and land gas turbines as well as for civil internal combustion engines, turbochargers and metallurgical industrial oxygen lances, etc.

2. High temperature adhesive wear resistant coating:High temperature roller such as heat treatment furnace roller, backup roller and sintering furnace roller is mostly operated at 800 °C-1200 °C high temperature. Using thermal spraying technology to spray special ceramic or cermet coating on the surface of high temperature furnace roller, and the roller will have good high temperature resistance, antioxidation, anti-adhesion, anti-knocking and self-cleaning and purifying functions, not only significantly improving the service life of the furnace roll, but also producing steel with excellent surface and good quality.

3.Wear and corrosion resistant coating:Spraying Al2O3-TiO2 composite coating to replace the traditional chrome plating process on high-pressure reciprocating metering pump plunger of the chemical plant, increasing its service life six-fold. Under low stress sliding wear and abrasion conditions, almost all of the original chrome-plated products can be replaced by thermal spray ceramic coatings.

4. Functional coating:Plasma spray, supersonic spray and superconducting ceramic coatings have all been successfully applied. The Al2O3 coating using plasma spraying can withstand a voltage of 2500 ° C or higher at a high temperature of 1300 ° C when the thickness is less than 1 mm, which satisfies the requirements for high-temperature electrical insulation. Spraying 50-75 μm hydroxyapatite or other bio active ceramic on titanium alloy substrate provides good chemical compatibility, therefore, it can be utilized as ideal artificial bone materials. There are a lot of corrosion and wear problems in oilfield drilling and oil recovery engineering, so it is expected that thermal spraying technology and ceramic coating have broad application prospects.
